Is Engagement Photography Important? YES!! Why?

Engagement_Sessions

Your engagement photography can be some of the most important photographs that you will take in your life. Maybe even more important than your wedding photography. So, I’m sure the question that you are asking now is this.

Why is engagement photography so important?

There are a few reasons that engagement photography can be very important:

1) They are essential if you would like engagement announcements in the paper or save the date cards with your photographs on them.

2) You will need one to display at your wedding for people to sign or you can have a book of many photographs made for people to sign.

3) Mini-books of your engagement session make great gifts for your bridal party and relatives.

4) BUT THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT REASON: Your engagement session accomplishes a major goal. It allows your wedding photographer to get to know you and vice versa. You will be spending a lot of time together or speaking before your wedding day and also on your big day. You want to know this person that will be taking the most important photographs of your life. Well, until your children come along anyway. It is so important to forge a relationship and be relaxed around your photographer Not only that, but the engagement portraits give you a sneak peek at how your photographer operates. This will help your photographs on your wedding day run more smoothly because you already know what your photographer expects. It also allows your photographer to get to know you photographically. What I mean is this. During your engagement session, you photographer will pick up on little hints about what makes you photograph well, otherwise known as your angles. These little hints are very important to make your wedding photography the best that it can be!!

So, now that we have decided that an engagement session is extremely important, there are still a few things that you need to decide.

Engagements_3

When it should be:

Usually, you should have your engagement session about 6-12 months out from the wedding.  If you would like to use your engagement pictures as part of your Save the Date, then you should do them 9-12 months prior to the wedding date.  This way, you can have your Save the Date cards out 6 months prior to your wedding date.  If the Save the Date is not a consideration, then 6 months prior to the date is fine.  I especially like the idea of the engagement portraits being done in a different season than the wedding (i.e. fall engagement portraits for a spring wedding).  This way, you get variety.

Where it should be:

Think of a place that is really special for you and your fiance.  Maybe it is where you met or where he proposed.  Or maybe there is an activity that the two of your really enjoy.  Ashley and Elias love to hike and always end up near a waterfall to camp.  So we based their engagement session on that.  Jessica loves horses and she and her fiance, Andrew, both have favorite book series.  So we did a little picnic with their favorite books at a horse farm.  Be sure to talk to your photographer about what you enjoy and what you envision.

Engagements_2

If you have a good photographer, they will love to have your input on your session.  I love it when a couple really tailors their engagement session to them.  It doesn’t have to be something big and elaborate.  It can simply be something like Madhumati and Jared‘s engagement session where we visited a few of their favorite places on campus and downtown Athens.  Be sure to ask your photographer to see some examples of sessions they have photographed in particular locations so that you can get an idea of what their sessions look like in those locations.  And don’t be disappointed if you can’t get the same exact look.  I love a unique look for each couple.  For example, Samantha really wanted Traci and Grey’s location.  Unfortunately, the hay bales were not to be last year but we did find these amazing locations for their session instead.  Styled engagement sessions are becoming more and more popular, so keep that in mind.

How to Dress:

This really depends on who you are and the location of your session in my opinion.  Have a look around to decide what outfits would work best for your style.  And usually 2-3 outfits is perfect for your session.

I hope that this helps everyone with their engagement session questions!!  Please check us out on Pinterest for more engagement session inspiration!
